How We Help
Family visa applications can involve very different requirements depending on who is joining whom and the circumstances of the family. Lawyers for Expats Thailand helps Thai citizens and their families identify the appropriate UK family route, prepare the supporting evidence and manage the application through to the decision.
How We Help
A family visa application is prepared around your actual family circumstances, not a template. Here is what happens from the first call through to the decision.
We start by understanding who the Thai applicant wants to join in the UK, the family relationship involved and the circumstances of both the applicant and the UK-based family member.
We assess the circumstances to identify the family visa route that appears relevant before the application and supporting evidence are prepared.
We bring together the family, financial, accommodation and other supporting evidence relevant to that particular application.
We prepare and manage the application from submission through to the decision, assisting with further information requests where appropriate. The final decision is made by the UK immigration authority, not by Lawyers for Expats Thailand.
What We Do For Our Clients
UK family visas cover a range of different relationships and circumstances. Here is the actual scope of what our team handles.
"Family visa" is an umbrella description, and the correct application depends on the actual relationship and circumstances. Potential situations can include a child joining a parent in the UK, a parent applying to live with or care for a qualifying child in the UK, certain dependent or qualifying family circumstances, or a relative joining a family member in circumstances where a specific family route applies. Where the circumstances are actually a partner, spouse or fiancé(e) case, we use the correct existing service for that route rather than treating it as generic family-visa work.
Is there one single UK family visa for every type of relative?
No. UK family immigration includes different routes depending on the relationship and circumstances involved. We first establish which route appears relevant before preparing the application.
Some applications involve a Thai child joining or remaining with a parent in the UK. Relevant evidence can depend on circumstances including identity and the parent-child relationship, parental circumstances, where the child lives, responsibility and care arrangements, the UK status of the relevant parent, financial or support evidence where applicable, and other evidence required by the particular route.
Can a Thai child apply to join a parent in the UK?
Potentially, yes. The correct route and evidence depend on the child's age, family circumstances and the immigration status and circumstances of the parent in the UK. We assess the individual situation before preparing the application.
There are circumstances where a parent may apply on the basis of their relationship with a qualifying child in the UK. This route is specifically tied to qualifying circumstances involving the child — it is not a general route for any Thai parent with family in Britain, and where somebody is eligible to apply as a partner, that route applies instead. Relevant service work may include organising evidence around the parent-child relationship, care and responsibility, where the child lives, the child's UK status, contact and involvement, and the circumstances relied upon in the application.
Can every Thai parent with family in Britain apply for a UK family visa?
No. Eligibility depends on the specific family relationship and the circumstances of the person in the UK. Having a relative in Britain does not by itself create an automatic right to a family visa.
Family applications can involve financial and accommodation evidence depending on the route. Potential evidence may concern income or resources, support available in the UK, intended accommodation, the circumstances of the UK-based family member, and evidence concerning dependants where relevant. What is required varies by family route — for example, child applications can involve evidence concerning the parent or parents being joined.
The documentation required depends on the family route. Thai documents may include evidence of birth or parentage, marriage or divorce where relevant, custody or responsibility where relevant, identity and family relationship, with appropriate English translations where Thai-language documents are relied upon. English-language requirements do not apply uniformly across every family route — some applicants, including children and adults applying to be cared for by a relative, are exempt. We identify the language, relationship and document requirements relevant to the particular family route rather than assuming every applicant has the same requirements.
Our work includes preparing the application, checking identities, dates and family relationships, checking consistency across the supporting evidence, organising documentation and preparing for submission. Applicants also go through an identity and biometric stage where applicable. We manage the case through to the decision and assist with further information requests where appropriate.
Who decides whether a UK family visa is granted?
The decision is made by the relevant UK immigration authority. Lawyers for Expats Thailand prepares and manages the application but does not control or guarantee the outcome.
