Getting Married in Thailand
Your guide to a Marriage Visa (non-O) in Thailand [UPDATED 2022] www.layersforexpatsthailand.com
Thai women are among the most beautiful and wonderful women in the world.
If you find the right one and treat her with respect and love, she will be loyal and be the most wonderful wife you can ever imagine.
However, if you find the wrong one or you do not treat her or her family with respect it can be a very different story .
Thailand is one of the most popular countries in Southeast Asia to retire, work and settle.
The women of Thailand also hold a big attraction for Foreigners seeking love and marriage.
Remember foreign men also hold a huge attraction to some Thai women not for their good looks, or great personality but for their ability to support them and their family.
There is nothing wrong with this but go into any relationship especially marriage with your eyes wide open.
Are you just a walking ATM?
If you are in your 70s and the woman you meet is in her 30s or 40s then ask yourself what is attracting her to you.
Do not be delusional.
Many foreigners come to Thailand with their retirement lump some payout and are eager to impress I have seen it time and time again.
They meet a beautiful woman and start buying gifts and taking her and her family for meals and start throwing money around eager to win her love and affection.
Many meet girls in bars (is this the place to meet your future wife)?
It can be very dangerous.
When I say dangerous, I mean life threatening dangerous.
The money you have is meant to last for the rest of your life, especially if you are retired, finding work in Thailand is not an easy task.
I hear so many stories of Foreigners who came to Thailand to retire with a large amount of money, but the money ran out and they must return to their own country reluctantly.
You do not want this to happen to you.
Remember week after week we hear the horror stories, and the most common factors are the circumstances of how and where the foreigners meet their wives and that they rushed into marriage and did not get to know the real person who they were marrying, they also did not have any Prenuptial Agreement or Usufruct to enable them to live in the house they purchased in the name of their Thai partner.

It costs nothing to speak to us.
I am not saying that you can’t find real love meeting a bar girl, because I know people who met their wives in bars and have been happily married for many years, it just makes it harder to determine if it is love or just a cash transaction and there are many other things to consider too.
How do you know if this person has true feelings for you?
Due diligence and preparation are very important in everything you do.
How do you find the right woman for marriage in Thailand or anywhere ?
Many Foreigners come to Thailand after divorcing in their home country and make the mistake of marrying on the rebound a stranger whom they know nothing about,
Marriage should be for life and not entered lightly.
Do not rush into marriage get to know your partner and their family as when marrying in Thailand you are marrying into a family, and this can carry a huge responsibility financially.
If your partner has children get to know them, they are going to be a part of your life and affect your relationship, even and especially if they are grown up.
If you can’t stand them, or they you then this relationship is going nowhere fast.
Their problems will become yours too, the Thai family bond is strong it is one of the wonderful attributes of the Thais.
Understand Thai culture because this will have an impact on your relationship.
Learn to speak Thai (I need to practice what I am preaching here) not speaking Thai, makes it difficult to communicate .
It is frustrating and is the main cause of arguments in a relationship here in Thailand.
For a good relationship to progress you need good communication.

As the name of the visa itself, Thai Marriage Visa can be obtained by those who have a registered marriage with a Thai Citizen.
After the Marriage Registration in Thailand, the foreigner will be eligible to apply for Thai Marriage Visa or Non-Immigrant “O” visa under the category of Thai Spouse.
Obtaining this type of visa is quite easy and the process and requirements are straightforward, but the documents must be authenticated and certified before you apply for a Thai Marriage Visa.
You do not require legal assistance when applying for this type of visa but there are other things to consider now that you are to become legally married and now is the best time to do so.

If you are over 50 and do not wish to work, then you may consider a retirement visa instead of a marriage visa.
However, the criteria for obtaining a retirement visa are higher it requires 800,000 in a Thai bank for 2 months prior to application.
Note: When you register a Marriage with a Thai Citizen, it doesn’t automatically grant you the Thai Marriage Visa, you must apply for it at the Immigration Office and provide the required documents for the visa application.
Furthermore, you must also be qualified for the Immigration to grant you this visa.

2. Overview Process for Thai Marriage Visa.
The process for Thai Marriage Visa is quite straightforward.
You will be eligible to apply for this visa once you settle your Marriage Registration with a Thai Citizen.
After the Marriage Certificate has been issued to you by the District Office, you can already proceed with the Thai Marriage Visa Application.
You must first secure a substantial number of days left on your visa before you apply for the Marriage Visa, we advise at least 15 working days left on your visa.
Remember, you can convert your visa to Thai Marriage Visa after you have secured all the required documents.
After you secure the Marriage Registration Documents and your current visa still has substantial days left, you must remember that you should also have 400,000THB deposited in a Thai Bank account at least 2 months prior to the Thai Marriage Visa application.
Or you can provide evidence of monthly income above 40,000THB per month. Please do note that after 2021, several Embassies in Thailand no longer issue this letter. In this case, you need to prove by tax payment in Thailand .
The process is quite straightforward, if you follow the requirements and procedure for the visa, it will be an easy job.
The initial visa that will be given to you is valid for 3 months, before the period expires, you can renew it for 1-year extension yearly if you comply to the requirements of the Thai Marriage Visa.
3. Thai marriage visa requirements 2022.
Thai Marriage Visa requirements 2022 are different from other Non-Immigrant Visa, although the process for Marriage Visa is quite easy but you must ensure that all the documents are prepared correctly according to the Immigration Office.
Here are the following basic requirements you must keep in mind for your Thai Marriage Visa application:
Passport (must be valid for at least 6 months and must have 2 blank pages)
Copy of your Thai marriage certificate (both versions).
Copy of your Thai wife’s ID card front and back (signed by her)
Copy of your Thai wife’s Tabian Baan (House Registration Papers) (signed by her)
Copy of a map to your residence in Thailand
Copy of photos showing you and your wife together (House, Inside of the House, Family Picture, Outside of the House)
Copy of your bank book showing 400,000 THB in your bank account deposited at least 2 months prior to visa application or copy of your income showing 40,000 THB per month in income
Bank Guarantee and Bank Statement
The Immigration Office will require you to show the following documents for them to consider your Thai Marriage Visa application.
Marriage Registration with a Thai citizen doesn’t guarantee you will get Thai Marriage Visa, it will always depend on the documents you will show as stated above.
Please note from 2021 the Immigration office will random check by visiting your house and may interview your neighbors to make sure that your relationship is real.

4. Validity of Stay.
When you marry a Thai inside Thailand or overseas, you are entitled to obtain One Year Marriage Visa or called “Non-Immigrant O”.
This kind of visa is for a maximum of 1 year and it needs to be extended each year.
The initial validity of stay that you will get upon your first Thai Marriage Visa application would be 3 months, before the expiration of that period you can renew it for 1-year.
Thai Marriage visa rules are renewable every year but keep in mind that you don’t have to exit Thailand just to secure a renewal of Thai marriage visa.
It can be renewed inside the country if you are able to meet the requirements of the Thai Embassy.
Keep in mind that upon renewal of your application you will still be required to present the documents and pass the eligibility according to the Immigration Office and Ministry of Foreign Affairs Thailand.
We highly advise that 2-3 months prior to your Thai Marriage Visa extension, you must secure the 400,000 THB in your bank account to show you are still capable of supporting your Thai Wife.

5. Important Reminders.
90-day Reporting
Holders of any Thai Non-Immigrant visa such as Non-Immigrant “B” Visa, Retirement Visa, Marriage Visa etc. must report their current address to a Thai immigration office every 90 days.
This can be done three ways:
In person at a Thai immigration office.
By mail.
Electronically (although the site is very unreliable )
Through an agent who has the Power of Attorney to report your status.
If you are not in Thailand on the date your 90-day reporting is due, you do not need to report your status, your 90-day reporting will begin again from day 1 on the date you re-enter Thailand.
Re-entry Permit
If you plan on leaving and re-entering Thailand whilst on a Non-Immigrant O Marriage Visa, you will first need to obtain a re-entry permit to not lose your visa when you leave.
A re-entry permit can be secured from a Thai Immigration Office or International Airport. The fees are 1,000 Baht for a single re-entry, and 3,800 Baht for a multiple re-entry permit.
When re-entering Thailand, make sure to note the number of your re-entry permit on your immigration arrival form for your visa to be re-activated.
Divorce
If you divorce your Non-Immigrant O Marriage Visa will become invalid, and you will be required to leave Thailand immediately.
In some cases, you may be allowed to remain in the Thailand until the Thai Marriage Visa expires, but you must first check at a Thai Immigration Office.
Immigration Tips
A Thai Non-Immigrant O Marriage Visa is very attractive to potential employers as it significantly lessens the process for employment, with the company only needing to apply for your work permit.
When renewing your Thai Non-Immigrant O Marriage Visa, you must have the necessary funds cleared in your Thai Bank account at least 3 months prior to your renewal application.
